What is Cannabis?
Cannabis over the years has been known as several other names that you may be familiar with such as Marijuana, Weed, Grass, Devil’s Lettuce, and Mary Jane just to name a few. All of these names were the result of cannabis prohibition. People wanted to keep using cannabis partly because of its medicinal properties therefore they came up with other names for it and over the years many of them stuck. However, it is time that we retire all those names and use its given name of Cannabis.
Cannabis contains around 540 chemical substances. Among those substances are compounds such as cannabinoids and terpenes which produce a harmonious effect when used together. Two popular cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) & Cannabidiol (CBD). THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid and produces the popular “high”, what you are feeling is euphoria & relaxation. CBD is better known for its possible therapeutic effects and does not produce a “high”.The smell you pick up from cannabis is produced by terpenes, they are aromatic oils that contain distinct flavors like pine, citrus, and berry. Terpenes can also play a role in the effects of cannabis as they may promote stress relief and relaxation while other terpenes are prone to promote focus & insight.
Before prohibition, Cannabis was widely used for its medicinal properties all over the world. From tinctures & salves to smoking, human beings were using cannabis. Studies have shown that cannabis may alleviate pain (including neuropathic pain), control nausea & vomiting, stimulate appetite, reduce anxiety and depression, and reduce inflammation among many other effects.
Cannabis is federally illegal; however, over half of the U.S. states have passed laws to legalize it at the state level for medical and/or recreational purposes. Don't have a medical cannabis card? No problem! My services are for everyone 21 and older (and pediatric patients with parent/guardian consent) that would like medical cannabis coaching. I do not inquire about the legality of cannabis in your state of residence, that is YOUR responsibility. I am here simply to help anyone that would like guidance in their cannabis journey.

Cannabis can have vast medical benefits, but only if used correctly. Once you figure it out, it can also be a lot of fun. There are thousands of products on the market. How do you know which is right for your needs? The wrong choice could mean ineffective medicine and/or negative experiences.

There are billions of neurons (brain cells) that make up your endocannabinoid system. Many of them are contained in your brain. When you use cannabis, the unique chemicals founds in the plant (known as cannabinoids) interact with those neurons and make them “fire”.

While no one knows how physical processes can cause subjective feelings, we do know that this “firing” is what gets you “high”. The unique architecture of your endocannabinoid system is why different people get different highs from the same strain.

Many don’t realize it, but you also have neurons throughout your body too! That means that the same endocannabinoid system that gets you high is responsible for affecting your body as well. If you’ve ever been “couch-locked”, it’s because the strain of cannabis you ingested interacted rather strongly with your body’s endocannabinoid system. Just like with your brain, the architecture of your body’s endocannabinoid system will determine how cannabinoids interact with it – making the difference between muscle relaxation and muscle tension.

Fortunately, your DNA can tell us a lot about you and your endocannabinoid system. Your genes also hold the key to your health and how it can change in the future. Our team has found a way to use big data to help you find the right cannabis products for your medical and recreational needs.

Your personalized report is the result of 300 analyses run on your genetic data. Your cannabis health report will show you which cannabinoids and terpenes are best for you. You’ll also receive information about your general health and genetic predispositions so you can learn how cannabis can best assist you. We’ll direct you to the right types of cannabis products you should look for to help optimize your health. We’ll also help keep you away from products that could do damage.

Viridiana Edwards (aka "V")

CannaVi Alternative Care was founded by Viridiana Edwards (Vee). Viridiana is a born and raised Texan. At the age of 17, she joined the U.S. Army and left for South Carolina for basic training. A few years later in 2009, she received orders to report to her new unit in Iowa and was set to deploy to Kandahar, Afghanistan. In June of 2015, Viridiana received a medical retirement from the U.S. Army after 10 years of service due to the injuries she sustained while serving in Afghanistan from 2009-2010.
Viridiana sought treatment for her injuries with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Unfortunately, she was prescribed pharmaceutical medications that ended up harming her instead of helping her. Since the treatments from the Department of Veterans Affairs were unsuccessful for Viridiana, she began treating her PTSD, chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and paralysis episodes with medical cannabis. Viridiana began making her own CBD sublingual drops and body oil. Viridiana's personal experience, along with evidence-based practices helps her with creating the personalized regimens for individuals seeking medical cannabis coaching.
In 2019, Viridiana was accepted into the first class, in the nation’s first, Master of Science in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics with the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Viridiana has published two papers on medical cannabis and continues to research and advocate for national medical cannabis access for veterans. In 2020 Viridiana released a fun Jazz Cannabis Tune, check it out!
